The excitement surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal this morning has reignited rumors about the potential use of Joy-Cons as a mouse. The reveal trailer showcased a tantalizing glimpse that supports these speculations. In one scene, a pair of detached Joy-Cons are seen being lowered onto a surface with their attachment side down. They connect to a pair of connectors with relatively flat bottoms and then slide across the surface, mimicking the movement of a mouse on a mouse pad. A closer look even reveals what appears to be a slider pad on the bottom of one of the connectors, adding further credence to the theory.
Rumors have been circulating that the Nintendo Switch 2 might incorporate a sensor inside the Joy-Cons, similar to those found in computer mice. Although Nintendo has not officially confirmed this feature or its implications, the gaming community is abuzz with speculation. Fans believe this could enhance gameplay for titles like Civilization, which traditionally benefit from mouse and keyboard controls. Others suggest that, given Nintendo's history of innovation, this feature could be utilized in unique and creative ways within their first-party software. The possibilities are still up in the air.
While the potential for mouse support with the Switch 2 remains a mystery, along with the function of the new Joy-Con button, we do have some confirmed details about the console. Officially named the Nintendo Switch 2, it's set to launch in 2025. A new Mario Kart game is in development for the system, and it will be backward compatible with the original Switch. More information about upcoming software will be shared during a Direct in April. You can find all the latest updates on our Nintendo Switch 2 coverage right here.
