Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice

Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer a novel functionality: operating as computer mice. While the widespread adoption of this feature by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller experimentation.

The evidence originates from Famiboards user LiC, who previously accessed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.

In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests referencing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." This terminology, typically associated with computer mice, strongly hints at mouse-like functionality for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they represent unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, is large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.

Not a First for Handheld Consoles

While unconventional, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already incorporates this feature with its right controller, transformable into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even supplies a plastic housing to aid smooth surface movement.

The Legion GO also features magnetic rails for controller attachment—a feature rumored for the Switch 2. Therefore, the Legion GO might offer a preview of Nintendo's hybrid console design.
