Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team Joins Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
Get ready for a dungeon-crawling adventure! Nintendo announced the addition of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service, launching August 9th. This classic Game Boy Advance title joins the growing library of retro games available to Expansion Pack subscribers.
This roguelike adventure puts you in the paws (or fins, or wings!) of a Pokémon, tasked with solving the mystery of your human-to-Pokémon transformation. Explore procedurally generated dungeons, complete missions, and uncover the truth! While a Blue Rescue Team version existed for the Nintendo DS, and a remake, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, launched for the Switch in 2020, this is a chance to experience the original GBA adventure.
Mainline Pokémon Games Still Sought After
The Expansion Pack's retro game selection frequently receives updates, but the inclusion of primarily Pokémon spin-offs (like Pokémon Snap and Pokémon Puzzle League) has left some fans wanting more. Many are hoping for the addition of mainline titles such as Pokémon Red and Blue. Speculation regarding this absence includes potential technical hurdles, such as N64 Transfer Pak compatibility issues, Nintendo Switch Online infrastructure limitations, and complexities integrating the Pokémon Home app (which Nintendo doesn't fully own).
Nintendo Switch Online Mega Multiplayer Festival
Beyond the PMD announcement, Nintendo is hosting a Mega Multiplayer Festival, running until September 8th. Resubscribe to a 12-month Nintendo Switch Online membership via the eShop or My Nintendo Store and receive two bonus months! Further perks include extra Gold Points on game purchases (August 5th-18th) and free multiplayer game trials (August 19th-25th; specific titles TBA). A Mega Multiplayer game sale follows from August 26th to September 8th, 2024.
Looking Ahead to the Switch 2
With the Switch 2 on the horizon, the future of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack remains uncertain. How this service will integrate with the new console is yet to be revealed.
