Rare 'Space World' GameCube Prototype Hits eBay for $100K

by Ava Feb 12,2025

The Nintendo GameCube, despite being nearly 25 years old, maintains a dedicated fanbase eager to acquire rare variations. Highly sought-after examples include the DVD-playing Panasonic Q and numerous themed consoles like the Mobile Suit Gundam Char Red edition.

However, the pinnacle of rarity might be the Space World GameCube prototype, showcased at Nintendo Space World 2000. Initially believed lost, one of these LED-equipped prototypes resurfaced in 2023 at ConsoleVariations, discovered by Donny Fillerup.

Several key differences distinguish the Space World GameCube from retail versions. Most significantly, it lacks internal hardware, relying solely on LEDs to simulate operation. Physical distinctions include a semi-transparent black logo revealing the internal disc and modified vents. ConsoleVariations documented over 20 total variations compared to the original Japanese GameCube.

Donny Fillerup of ConsoleVariations has listed this Space World 2000 GameCube on eBay for a remarkable $100,000. Fillerup aims to use the proceeds to establish a retro gaming center, offering visitors a nostalgic experience.

Noteworthy is the absence of the controller in the sale, which also differs significantly from the standard GameCube controller.

This isn't Fillerup's first venture into rare console sales. In 2022, he auctioned a Golden Wii, once a gift from THQ to the British Royal Family, for $36,000.

Therefore, a six-figure price for a historically significant prototype like the Space World GameCube isn't entirely unreasonable. While the asking price is $100,000, Fillerup is open to offers, suggesting a potential for a lower sale price.
