Mark Hamill's unexpected appearance as Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian stands as one of the most thrilling surprises in Star Wars history. Rosario Dawson, who plays Ahsoka Tano, shared an amusing anecdote from Star Wars Celebration about her own surprise when Hamill appeared on the set of The Book of Boba Fett. Dawson had no inkling of his cameo until the moment he walked onto the set.
To keep Luke's cameo under wraps, showrunners Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau employed a clever ruse by using Jedi Master Plo Koon as a decoy in the scripts. This tactic was part of their broader strategy to prevent leaks, and it left Dawson as puzzled as any fan would be, especially since Plo Koon met his demise in Revenge of the Sith. Dawson recounted her confusion, saying, "I was like... I don't know... but people disappear and then they come back, so maybe it's possible?"
The surprise was complete when Hamill himself appeared on set, humorously dismissing the Plo Koon plotline by saying, "Plo Koon? That wouldn't even make sense!" Dawson admitted, "I know it didn't make sense, but I still had to think it made sense because I got the script and everything!"
Filoni and Favreau expressed their regret for not informing Dawson earlier, with Filoni joking, "We were in it so much," and Favreau adding, "That was bad on us!" He further explained the challenges of keeping two major secrets on the show: Grogu's reveal at the end of the first episode and Luke Skywalker's appearance at the end of season two. Despite leaks elsewhere, they managed to keep these secrets intact, though they missed informing Dawson.
Dawson took the oversight in stride, playfully stating, "I love it, they know I can't be trusted."
