In television, nothing beloved ever truly fades away — evidenced this year by revivals spanning from The Office to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Now joining the resurgence is the cherished 2000s medical comedy Scrubs.
Twenty-four years after Zach Braff first portrayed idealistic intern JD at Sacred Heart Hospital, the actor has officially signed on to reprise his iconic role in ABC's upcoming Scrubs revival. The project will blend original cast members with fresh faces.
This approach echoes ABC's previous failed attempt during Scrubs' controversial ninth season, which saw Braff and core cast members transitioning leadership to younger doctors. Poor reception led to cancellation after just nine episodes.

Now, nearly twenty years later, ABC is revisiting the concept under original creator Bill Lawrence's guidance. This new iteration aims to be both reboot and continuation.
With Braff confirmed, Entertainment Weekly reports more original cast members will likely follow. Lawrence explained his vision to Deadline:
"We've been developing ideas that combine two key elements: first, giving fans updates on beloved characters navigating modern medicine; second, capturing that original magic of idealistic newcomers entering this challenging field."
The original Scrubs aired 182 episodes from 2001-2010. Production dates for new episodes remain unannounced.
