The film adaptation of the acclaimed video game *Sleeping Dogs*, which was confirmed to be cancelled earlier this month, might see a revival thanks to Marvel star Simu Liu. According to a report by Newsweek, Liu responded to a fan's request on X/Twitter for a movie version of the 2012 game, stating that he is actively working to bring the project to life. "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen," Liu shared, sparking renewed interest and hope among fans.
Originally announced in 2017, the film was set to feature Donnie Yen in the lead role. However, the project stalled a year later and was officially scrapped just a few weeks ago, as confirmed by Yen himself. He expressed his disappointment, noting the significant effort and personal investment he had made in the project. "I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights," Yen explained. "I waited for years. And I really wanted to do it. And unfortunately... I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?"
The hope for a film adaptation of the Hong Kong-set action franchise seemed lost until Liu's recent social media interaction. Whether Liu will successfully secure the rights and move forward with the project remains uncertain, but his involvement has reignited excitement.
*Sleeping Dogs* was released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, and follows the story of detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates one of Hong Kong's notorious Triad crime syndicates. The game was well-received, earning an impressive 8/10 from IGN, though it never received a sequel.
