Kadokawa, now a Sony Group subsidiary, sets ambitious goal: 9,000 original IP publications annually. This represents a significant increase from their 2023 output and is detailed in their medium-term management plan.
Sony's Major Investment Fuels Expansion
Following Sony's acquisition of a 10% stake, Kadokawa President Takeshi Natsuno announced plans to reach 9,000 original IP publications per year by fiscal year 2027. This aggressive target, 1.5 times their 2023 output, leverages Sony's global distribution network for international expansion. An interim goal of 7,000 titles by fiscal 2025 is also projected.
To support this growth, Kadokawa plans to increase its editorial staff by 1.4 times, aiming for approximately 1,000 employees, ensuring efficient workflow and sustainable expansion.
Media Mix Strategy and Synergies with Sony
Kadokawa will employ a "media mix strategy," adapting successful IPs into anime, games, and other media. This diversification aims to maximize the impact of their diverse portfolio. This strategy aligns perfectly with Sony's interest in multimedia expansion, particularly leveraging Crunchyroll's vast subscriber base (over 15 million paid subscribers) for anime distribution.
Kadokawa's extensive IP library includes notable titles such as Bungo Stray Dogs, Oshi no Ko, The Rising of the Shield Hero, and various game franchises developed by studios under its umbrella (e.g., Elden Ring, Dragon Quest, Danganronpa, Mario & Luigi series). This strong foundation supports their ambitious publication goals. Sony's aim to expand into live-action adaptations and international distribution further enhances the synergistic potential of this partnership.
