Steam Deck Game Reviews & Impressions

NBA 2K25 Steam Deck Review

Despite the usual yearly sports game skepticism, NBA 2K25 stands out. It's the first time since the PS5 launch that the PC version mirrors the "Next Gen" console experience, and it's officially optimized for the Steam Deck (though not yet officially rated by Valve). My experience playing it on the Steam Deck, alongside consoles, was positive, though some familiar 2K issues persist.

Key improvements for PC players include ProPLAY technology (previously exclusive to PS5/Xbox Series X) and the WNBA and MyNBA modes making their PC debuts. If you've held off on PC 2K games, this is the one to get. The hope is its success will ensure future PC releases match the console versions and continue strong Steam Deck support.

The Steam Deck and PC versions offer 16:10 and 800p support. AMD FSR 2, DLSS, and XeSS are supported (though I disabled them due to blurriness). V-sync options, dynamic v-sync targeting 90/45fps, HDR (functional on Steam Deck), texture detail, overall quality, and shader options are available. Initial shader caching is recommended. The advanced graphics menu offers granular control over various settings (shader detail, shadows, player/crowd detail, etc.). I found a balance of medium settings (player detail, shader detail) and 60fps at 60hz for optimal clarity. The default Steam Deck preset was deemed too blurry.

Offline play is partially supported. While some modes require online access, quick play and eras function offline, with faster load times observed.

While technically inferior to console versions, the Steam Deck's portability makes it my preferred platform. Load times are slower than on PS5/Xbox Series X, and there's no cross-play with consoles. Microtransactions remain a concern, especially for certain game modes. The $69.99 PC price is higher than previous years.

NBA 2K25 delivers a fantastic portable basketball experience on the Steam Deck, matching PS5/Xbox Series X features. With minor adjustments, visuals and performance are excellent. 2K has finally brought all features to PC. Be mindful of microtransactions.

NBA 2K25 Steam Deck review score: 4/5

Gimmick! 2 Steam Deck Impressions

(See Shaun's Switch review for game details). Gimmick! 2 runs well on Steam Deck (unverified), even benefiting from recent Steam Deck/Linux fixes. It's capped at 60fps (forcing 60hz on OLED is recommended). No graphics options are present, but 16:10 menu support is included (gameplay remains 16:9). Runs perfectly out of the box and is a strong candidate for Steam Deck Verification.

Arco Steam Deck Mini Review

Arco, a dynamic turn-based RPG, is significantly improved post-launch. The Steam version is the most up-to-date. It's a unique blend of turn-based and real-time elements, with compelling audio and storytelling. Steam Deck Verified, capped at 60fps (16:9 only), and includes an assist mode (beta). The option to skip the first act on replay is a welcome addition.

A highly recommended tactical RPG with a memorable story. A free demo is available.

Arco Steam Deck review score: 5/5

Skull and Bones Steam Deck Mini Review

Recently released on Steam, Skull and Bones is rated "Playable" by Valve. Ubisoft Connect login is required (a slightly sluggish process). The game runs well at 30fps, 16:10, 800p with FSR 2 quality upscaling. Low settings (except high textures) provide a good experience.

Early impressions are positive, showing potential with continued support. It's online-only.

Recommendation: Try the free trial.

Skull and Bones Steam Deck review score: TBA

ODDADA Steam Deck Review

ODDADA is a music-making tool with a game-like structure. It runs perfectly at 90fps with touch controls (no controller support yet). Simple graphics options are available. Menu text is small on the Steam Deck.

Highly recommended for music/art enthusiasts. Controller support is in development.

ODDADA Steam Deck review score: 4.5/5

Star Trucker Steam Deck Mini Review

Star Trucker blends automobile simulation and space exploration. It runs well on Proton Experimental. Extensive graphics settings are available (resolution, v-sync, etc.). A custom preset with low shadows and 40fps was used. Controls are a significant drawback.

Despite control issues, the gameplay loop, visuals, writing, and voice acting are enjoyable. Further optimization is hoped for.

Star Trucker Steam Deck review score: 4/5

DATE A LIVE: Ren Dystopia Steam Deck Mini Review

A visual novel released on Steam, it runs perfectly on the Steam Deck at 720p (16:9). Check system settings to ensure correct button configuration.

Recommended for fans of the series. Play DATE A LIVE: Rio Reincarnation first.

DATE A LIVE: Ren Dystopia Steam Deck Review Score: 4/5

Total War: PHARAOH DYNASTIES Steam Deck Review Impressions

A relaunched and significantly improved version of Total War: PHARAOH. It's playable on Steam Deck using trackpad/touch controls (no controller support).

Initial impressions are positive.

Pinball FX Steam Deck Impressions

Pinball FX offers many PC graphics options and HDR support on Steam Deck. The gameplay is enjoyable across multiple tables. The free-to-play version is recommended to test compatibility and sample tables.

New Steam Deck Verified & Playable games for the week

Notable additions include Hookah Haze and OneShot: World Machine Edition (Verified). Black Myth: Wukong's "Unsupported" status is surprising given its performance.

Steam Deck Game Sales, Discounts, and Specials

The Games from Croatia sale features discounts on Talos Principle and other titles.

This concludes this week's Steam Deck Weekly. Feedback is welcome.
