The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: What We Know
The impending release of GTA 6 in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their beloved live service game. With GTA Online's continued profitability and longevity, concerns are rising about the potential for a "clean break" and the devaluation of existing investments of time and money.
Will a new GTA Online (perhaps GTA Online 2) replace the current version, leaving players' progress and in-game purchases obsolete? This question was posed to Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick. While he avoided specifics regarding unannounced projects, his comments offer insight by drawing a parallel to the NBA 2K Online franchise.
NBA 2K Online, launched in 2012, coexisted with its sequel, NBA 2K Online 2, released in 2017. Both versions remained active, demonstrating Take-Two's willingness to support legacy titles with engaged communities.
Zelnick stated, "Generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles... We did not sunset Online 1. They both are still in the market and they serve consumers and they're alive and we have this massive audience. So we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them.”
This suggests that a potential GTA Online 2 wouldn't necessarily replace the original. Continued player engagement with the existing GTA Online could lead to its continued support alongside any new iteration.
However, much about GTA 6 remains unknown. With only a trailer and a release window confirmed, Rockstar needs to provide more information soon, especially considering the proximity of the announced Borderlands 4 release in September. Until then, the fate of GTA Online remains somewhat uncertain, but Zelnick's comments offer a glimmer of hope for those invested in the current game.
