Two Zenless Zone Zero voice actors, Emeri Chase (Soldier 11) and Nicholas Thurkettle (Lycaon), claim they learned of their replacements via the game's patch notes. This situation highlights the ongoing conflict between SAG-AFTRA and the video game industry regarding generative AI and the replication of voice actor performances.
While Zenless Zone Zero, developed by HoYoverse, isn't directly impacted by the strike (its development predating the July 25, 2024, strike commencement), the actors chose not to sign new contracts, prioritizing solidarity with striking union members and advocating for AI protections.
Chase, a SAG-AFTRA member, explained on Bluesky that while the project wasn't officially "struck," it lacked the union-enforced AI rights currently being fought for. This led to their decision to withhold work, a choice they knew could result in replacement. They expressed disappointment that HoYoverse didn't communicate before recasting.
Thurkettle, not a union member, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the potential misuse of AI is an existential threat to the industry and that he stood by his decision to prioritize AI protection, even at the cost of his role.
HoYoVerse has been contacted for comment. This situation mirrors a similar incident with Activision, who confirmed recasting some Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 voice actors, including William Peck (Zeke Alton) and Samantha Maxis (Julie Nathanson). Alton expressed concern about the lack of credit for the replacement, potentially misrepresenting his abilities.
