Astro Bot Achieves Incredible Milestone

Summary

  • With 104 Game of the Year wins, Astro Bot is now the most awarded platformer ever.
  • Astro Bot surpassed the previous record holder, It Takes Two, by 16 awards.
  • However, matching the award counts of heavy hitters like Elden Ring and The Last of Us Part 2 seems unlikely for Astro Bot.

Astro Bot has officially claimed the title of the most awarded platforming game in history. Its Game of the Year victory at The Game Awards 2024 was a testament to its excellence, but the Team Asobi platformer has now added another remarkable achievement to its accolades.

Announced in May 2024, Astro Bot was eagerly anticipated by fans as an expanded version of the PS5's beloved Astro's Playroom tech demo, enriched with numerous PlayStation-related cameos. Although Sony did not initially position Astro Bot as a flagship title for the PS5, the game surpassed all expectations upon its release in September 2024. It quickly became the highest-rated new game of the year, and its success continued to grow in the following months.

At last month's The Game Awards 2024, Astro Bot swept numerous awards and culminated its triumph by winning the coveted Game of the Year award. While many thought this would be the peak of its accolades, a recent revelation indicates otherwise. Twitter user NextGenPlayer highlighted in a tweet that Astro Bot has now secured 104 Game of the Year awards, making it the most awarded platformer ever. This information is sourced from gamefa.com's Game of the Year Award Tracker, which also lists statistics for other winners.

Astro Bot Snags 104 Game of the Year Wins, Becomes Most Awarded Platformer of All Time

Astro Bot has overtaken the previous record holder, Hazelight Studios' It Takes Two, which won Game of the Year in 2021. With a 16-award lead over It Takes Two, Astro Bot's dominance in the platformer genre is clear, and this margin may grow further. However, the chances of Astro Bot matching the award counts of juggernauts like Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, and The Last of Us Part 2 are slim. Baldur's Gate 3 and The Last of Us Part 2 have secured 288 and 326 Game of the Year wins respectively, while Elden Ring holds the record as the most awarded game ever with 435 victories.

Despite this, there's no question that Astro Bot has been a resounding success for both Team Asobi and Sony. Commercially, the game sold over 1.5 million copies by November 2024, a significant achievement for a game developed by fewer than 70 people over three years with a moderate budget. If Astro Bot wasn't considered a major PlayStation franchise before, it certainly is now.
