The Steam Edition of GeoGuessr, launched on May 8 as a platform adaptation of the popular browser-based geography game, has shockingly become Steam's second worst-rated title despite its predecessor's success. The original web version enjoys 85 million players with extensive customization - from map selection and gameplay restrictions to community-created content.

Steam users have expressed overwhelming dissatisfaction, with 84% of over 3,000 reviews being negative. Primary complaints focus on the monetization approach and severely limited features compared to the browser version.

Account Restrictions and Feature Limitations

Players encounter several frustrating limitations:

  • Permanent account linking between browser and Steam versions
  • No logout functionality
  • Missing single-player practice mode
  • Suspected bot-filled amateur matches
  • Non-transferable browser subscriptions (except Elite Yearly)

The developer clarifies these policies in their FAQ, noting the Steam Pass requires a one-time $30 annual payment rather than recurring subscriptions. They emphasize this Early Access period will allow for improvements based on player feedback.

Monetization Backlash

The free version offers:

  • Under one hour of gameplay
  • Single Duels mode
  • Access only to Amateur Division

Full features require the $30/year Steam Pass. Comparatively, the browser version offers three daily free plays with optional $2.49-$4.99/month subscriptions.

Developer Response

GeoGuessr's marketing head Tomas Jonson told IGN:

  • The Steam release fulfills longstanding community requests
  • Early Access allows for expansion based on feedback
  • Ongoing Google Street View licensing costs necessitate the subscription model
  • Anti-cheat improvements represent a key Steam advantage
  • Planned six-month Early Access period will introduce new modes and features

"We appreciate the engagement and will continue working closely with our community," Jonson stated, acknowledging player preference for one-time purchase options.
