PlayStation Productions at CES 2025: A Wave of Game Adaptations
At CES 2025, PlayStation Productions made a splash, announcing several new game adaptations for 2025 and beyond. The announcements, made on January 7th, included anime series, movies, and a new season of a popular show.
New Adaptations Unveiled:
- Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Anime: A new anime series based on Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, produced by Crunchyroll and Aniplex, will premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027. Takanobu Mizumo will direct, Gen Urobuchi will handle story composition, and Sony Music will contribute the soundtrack.
- Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2 Films: Movies based on Horizon Zero Dawn (produced by Sony Pictures) and Helldivers 2 (produced by Columbia Pictures) are in development. Details are scarce at this time.
-
Until Dawn Film: A film adaptation of Until Dawn is slated for release on April 25, 2025.
-
The Last of Us Season Two: Neil Druckmann revealed a new trailer for The Last of Us season two, adapting elements from The Last of Us Part II and introducing characters like Abby and Dina.
Past Successes and Future Projects:
PlayStation Productions' history of game adaptations includes both successes and less-well-received projects. While early adaptations like Resident Evil and Silent Hill had mixed critical reception but strong box office performance, more recent efforts such as Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023) have achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success. The Twisted Metal series (Peacock, 2023) also saw a second season completed in late 2024, though a release date is pending.
Beyond the CES 2025 announcements, PlayStation Productions continues work on adaptations of Days Gone, a God of War TV series, and a sequel to the Uncharted film. The company's continued success suggests that more PlayStation franchises will likely receive adaptations in the future.
