Keep Your Guard Up
Xu Wu's agility makes it a challenging boss in Monster Hunter Wilds. Its unpredictable movements are compounded by its unique shape, which can make it difficult to anticipate its attacks. Similar to Nu Udra, Xu Wu's dark skin can obscure its front, adding to the difficulty. Be prepared to handle its multiple arms and its ability to vanish into walls, only to re-emerge from the ceiling in an attempt to ambush you. This tactic is exclusive to its nest, so exercise extra caution when fighting there.
Use Ice Attacks
Leverage Xu Wu's vulnerability to Ice in Monster Hunter Wilds by equipping Ice ammo or melee weapons that deal Ice damage. Enhance your gear with a Frost Jewel for the Ice Attack skill, and consider carrying Frost Pods for supplementary Ice damage.
Avoid the Grab Attack
Xu Wu employs tentacles and diving maneuvers, but its grab attack is particularly dangerous. If ensnared, you'll be unable to use your regular weapons. You have a brief window of about two seconds to escape; using your slinger, especially with Frost Pods, can help you break free.
Attack Xu Wu’s Mouth
The monster's mouth, hidden beneath its body, is its most vulnerable spot. It's only visible when Xu Wu dives at you, offering a prime opportunity to deal significant damage and potentially break its mouth for Xu Wu’s fang. Alternatively, target its head, which has a 4-star weakness to blunt and cut damage and a 3-star weakness to ammo damage.
Use Poison
Exploit Xu Wu's 3-star weakness to Poison by applying Poison Coating to your bow or using other poison-inducing methods. While other status ailments can be effective, avoid using Sleep, as it's less impactful against this creature.

Once Xu Wu's health drops to 20 percent, you can attempt to capture it using either a Pitfall Trap or a Shock Trap. Bait with meat or use yourself as a lure to draw the monster in, then quickly shoot a tranquilizer to keep it from escaping. You must act fast, as the window to tranquilize is brief.
