Unveiling "The Invincible Iron Man"
Edwards shared never-before-seen images and gameplay footage of the game, originally titled "The Invincible Iron Man," a nod to the character's comic book origins. Development followed the release of Genepool Software's X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge. His Twitter post included the title card, Genepool's logo, screenshots, and Xbox gameplay footage showcasing the startup screen and a desert-set tutorial.
Activision's Cancellation Decision
Despite positive fan reaction, Activision cancelled "The Invincible Iron Man" shortly after development began. Genepool Software subsequently closed, leaving the team unemployed. Edwards offered several potential reasons for the cancellation, including delays to the Iron Man film, dissatisfaction with the game's quality, or another developer being chosen for the project. The exact reason remains unconfirmed.
A Unique Iron Man Design
The game's Iron Man design, significantly different from Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU portrayal, drew considerable comment. Pre-dating the MCU by nearly five years, the suit closely resembled the "Ultimate Marvel" comic book version of the early 2000s. Edwards confirmed the design was the artist's decision.
Edwards promised further gameplay reveals, but at the time of writing, this has yet to materialize. The unearthed footage offers a fascinating glimpse into a lost chapter of Iron Man gaming history.
