Following his experience with Elden Ring: Nightreign’s network test, Lies of P Director Choi Ji-Won felt a renewed sense of creativity. During the 2025 Game Developers Conference (GDC), Choi shared insights with Eurogamer about the evolution of the Souls genre. Known for his admiration of FromSoftware games, Choi's influence is apparent in the design of Lies of P.

Reflecting on Elden Ring's upcoming expansion, Choi remarked, "I've tried [Nightreign] and it was very refreshing and new. So that obviously gave me the impression that they're good developers, they always push their boundaries, their imagination and vision, and it shows. In turn, that for some reason motivated me to deliver the Overture experience as good as it could be."

This experience has led him to consider branching into multiplayer games. Choi affirmed, "In terms of our future endeavours, we are definitely open to any sort of consideration in the future."

Despite his fondness for FromSoftware games, Choi emphasized that his inspiration is not confined to a single game. In a conversation with Games Radar+ at the 2025 GDC, he explained, "I'm a fan of many, many types of games, and that variety of different experiences and inspirations that I pick up with many different games I love, I sort of mold it into my own Lies of P experience. In the end, it's a combination of diverse inspirations that I get from many games that I love, and then I'm trying to transform that into a Lies of P experience that I'm developing for the fans of Lies of P now."

Overture Takes 15-20 Hours for Experienced Players

Choi disclosed that the Overture DLC is expected to take 15-20 hours for seasoned players to complete, packed with numerous bosses and content that the developers originally intended for the game’s launch. He elaborated, "Overture is not a complete separate piece from the base game, and there's a lot of interconnectivity between the two, so developing the expansion was almost like an effort to complete the Lies of P experience, and that was challenging."

Overture serves as a prequel, set in the final days of Krat, where players assume the role of a legendary Stalker. It incorporates new ideas, player feedback, and concepts that were initially omitted due to development constraints. Choi likened this expansion to a Director’s Cut, effectively rounding out the game's narrative.

He noted, "When we released the base game, we had to prioritize, as we mentioned, to do the best quality, so we couldn't deliver everything at once because we wanted to make sure what we can deliver has the best quality." Choi highlighted the significant support from the community post-launch, which inspired the team to fulfill their vision with the expansion.

Overture is Not Connected to the Final Cutscene of the Base Game

In an interview with IGN during the 2025 Game Developers Conference, Choi clarified that the Overture DLC does not directly connect to the final cutscene of the base game. While avoiding spoilers, he indicated that the game's conclusion offered insights into potential future directions for the Lies of P universe.

Choi had previously announced in a Director’s Letter video in November 2023 that a sequel to Lies of P was in the works, which might relate to the mentioned cutscene. However, specifics about Lies of P 2 remain undisclosed.

He assured fans, "What I can certainly tell you is when we share such news or media and assets with you, you'll know for sure that we are ready to present it to you. And that follows very our strict focus on quality [amid] all the pressure that we talked about in the past. So that is the one promise that I can share with you, that when we actually share those contents with you and the news, we will be ready to share that with you."
