Minecraft Creator Notch Hints at Minecraft 2 Development
Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has sparked excitement among fans by suggesting a potential sequel. A recent poll on X (formerly Twitter) revealed his consideration of developing a "spiritual successor" to his groundbreaking creation.
Notch's X poll presented two game concepts: a roguelike/first-person dungeon crawler hybrid and a Minecraft-inspired title. The latter option overwhelmingly won, garnering 81.5% of nearly 300,000 votes. This significant response seemingly confirms a strong desire among fans for a new game in the Minecraft vein.
In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed the seriousness of the poll, stating he had essentially announced Minecraft 2. He expressed enthusiasm for revisiting his passion project, acknowledging the potential financial success and fan demand. However, he emphasized his respect for Mojang Studios and Microsoft, the current owners of the Minecraft IP, assuring fans that any new project would not infringe on their work.
Notch acknowledged the inherent risks in developing spiritual successors, noting that they often deviate from initial expectations. Despite this, he expressed a willingness to tackle the challenge, driven by fan enthusiasm and the potential for another successful game.
While fans eagerly await Notch's next project, they can anticipate other Minecraft-related entertainment in the coming years. This includes planned theme park attractions in the UK and US (2026-2027) and the upcoming live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," slated for release in 2025.
