While Fields of Mistria is lauded for its well-developed romance options and engaging storylines, the straightforward answer to whether you can date in the traditional sense is currently no. However, the existing romance system is rich and rewarding, justifying the game's price point and significant playtime.
The November 2024 update significantly enhanced the romance mechanics. The maximum relationship level (hearts) increased from four to six, introducing additional heart events for each romanceable NPC to mark relationship progression. These new events, featuring playable cutscenes, unlock at two, four, and six hearts. Future updates are planned to expand this even further to eight and ten hearts, but no concrete dates have been revealed beyond the anticipated March 2025 update (which won't include expanded heart levels).

Despite the lack of explicit "dating" mechanics, the current romance system shines due to its realistic and engaging dialogue, often incorporating flirtatious elements. Even the early cutscenes, while potentially interpreted as platonic, are ambiguous enough to allow for romantic interpretations, fostering a satisfyingly gradual development of relationships.
A significant addition in the latest update is the Shooting Star Festival. This summer event allows players to initiate a date-like experience with eligible NPCs (requiring four hearts).
