Respawn Cancels Multiplayer FPS Project

by Owen Mar 13,2025

Respawn Entertainment, the developer behind Apex Legends, has canceled an unannounced incubation project, resulting in layoffs. This was first reported by Insider Gaming, citing a LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator.

IGN independently confirmed the cancellation. The project, a multiplayer FPS, stemmed from a team previously working on a canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. While the exact number of layoffs remains unconfirmed, sources describe it as "small." At least one individual connected to the project clarified on LinkedIn that their departure was voluntary.

This cancellation follows a pattern of project cancellations and layoffs at EA, beginning in 2023 with job cuts at BioWare and Codemasters. A larger round of layoffs affecting 670 employees and multiple projects, including the aforementioned Star Wars FPS, occurred almost exactly a year ago. Respawn itself experienced layoffs at that time. Further restructuring at BioWare followed, with internal developer reassignments and additional, unspecified layoffs.

Electronic Arts has been contacted for comment.
