On Wednesday morning, Apple unveiled the iPhone 16e, marking it as the most budget-friendly option in their current lineup. This new model steps in to replace the now outdated 2022 iPhone SE, offering a more contemporary "affordable" choice. However, it's priced at $599, which narrows the price gap with the $799 iPhone 16 released last fall. Pre-orders for the iPhone 16e kick off on Friday, Feb. 21, with the official release following the next week on Friday, Feb. 28.
The iPhone 16e is groundbreaking as the first to include Apple’s C1 cellular modem. Apple's reputation for in-house chip innovation, showcased in the M1 and A-series chips, sets high expectations for the C1. Given the modem's crucial role in phone functionality, any shortcomings could lead to connectivity issues. Hopefully, Apple has taken lessons from the "Antennagate" incident with the iPhone 4 and ensured robust connectivity for the iPhone 16e.

At first glance, the iPhone 16e bears a striking resemblance to the iPhone 14, featuring the same 6.1-inch OLED display with a 2532x1170 resolution and 1,200-nit peak brightness. While it doesn't match the iPhone 16's sharpness or brightness, the iPhone 16e includes the Action button and a USB-C port, though it omits the Camera Control feature.
The rear design of the iPhone 16e sets it apart from other models, sporting a single 48MP camera similar to the iPhone 16's main camera but without certain advanced features like sensor-shift stabilization, the latest Photographic styles, and adjustable focus in portrait mode. The front-facing camera, however, is identical and supports Face ID.
The iPhone 16e's construction includes an aluminum frame, a glass back, and Apple’s Ceramic Shield on the front. While Apple touts the Ceramic Shield as "tougher than any smartphone glass," it's worth noting that a newer version of Ceramic Shield, claimed to be "two times tougher," exists. This raises questions about the durability of the older Ceramic Shield on the iPhone 16e, especially considering the wear and tear observed during the iPhone 16 review.
Internally, the iPhone 16e demonstrates Apple's strategy of product stratification. It features an "A18" chip like the iPhone 16 but with a reduced 4-core GPU compared to the iPhone 16's 5-core GPU. This adjustment likely positions the iPhone 16e a step below the iPhone 16 in performance. Nevertheless, the inclusion of the Neural Engine means the iPhone 16e can utilize Apple Intelligence features.
The iPhone 16e, at $599, represents a compromise to achieve a lower price point than Apple's other models. While it doesn't seem excessively compromised, the discount isn't as significant as that of the earlier iPhone SE models. The 2022 iPhone SE, priced at $429, offered a near 50% discount compared to the then $799 iPhone 13, despite its dated design. The iPhone 16e, based on a design only a couple of years old with minor yearly tweaks since 2018, offers a more modern look at a higher price point.
The real test will be how the iPhone 16e performs in the market. With compelling Android alternatives like the OnePlus 13R around the $600 mark, Apple faces a challenge in attracting customers outside its ecosystem.
