This guide delves into the enigmatic Dwarf of Stardew Valley, one of the game's more mysterious characters. Residing alone in the mines, he presents a unique challenge for friendship-building, requiring players to learn a new language and navigate his unusual gift preferences. This updated guide reflects recent game updates (January 8, 2024) affecting NPC interactions.
Finding the Dwarf
Located in the mines, a large boulder (easily broken with a copper pickaxe or bomb) obscures the Dwarf's shop. Once cleared, his unique shop becomes accessible.
Unlocking Dwarvish
The Dwarf speaks Dwarvish. To understand him, players must donate all four Dwarf Scrolls to the museum. Gunther will then provide a Dwarvish translation guide. Only then can meaningful interactions begin.
Gifting the Dwarf
Friendship with the Dwarf hinges on gift-giving (up to two gifts weekly). His birthday (Summer 22nd) offers an eightfold friendship point boost.
Loved Gifts (+80 Friendship Points):
- Gemstones: Amethyst, Aquamarine, Jade, Ruby, Topaz, Emerald
- Lemon Stone
- Omni Geode
- Lava Eel
- All universally loved gifts
Liked Gifts (+45 Friendship Points):
- All universally liked gifts
- All Artifacts
- Cave Carrot
- Quartz
Disliked/Hated Gifts (Friendship Point Decrease): Avoid all mushrooms, foraged items, and universally hated gifts (except Artifacts).
Movie Theater Encounters
The Dwarf attends movie screenings at the Movie Theater (post-1.5 update). He "Loves" all movie choices but has specific snack preferences:
- Loves: Stardrop Sorbet, Rock Candy
- Likes: Cotton Candy, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jawbreaker, Salmon Burger, Sour Slimes, Star Cookie
Other concessions result in friendship point loss. Strategic gift-giving and movie selection will maximize friendship gains.
