Rebuilding a Classic with Unreal Engine

11 bit Studios, creators of Frostpunk, surprised fans with the reveal of Frostpunk 1886, a remake of the original title powered by Unreal Engine. Announced via a Twitter (X) post on April 24, the game introduces a fresh Purpose Path, mod support, and more, while preserving the essence of the 2018 classic.

In a detailed Steam update on the same day, the developers shared their vision for the project. Moving away from their in-house Liquid Engine, used for the original game, they’ve embraced Unreal Engine 5, inspired by its success in Frostpunk 2. “We aim to enhance the experience with sharper visuals, higher resolution, and the advanced capabilities of Unreal Engine,” they explained.
