You won't encounter the opportunity to duel immediately; this feature unlocks in Chapter 2. However, you can't challenge just any opponent. Only high-ranking and prominent enemy officers are eligible for duels. When these officers appear, you'll have a brief window to initiate a duel by pressing the R1 and L1 buttons simultaneously.

Upon initiating a duel, an arena formed by surrounding soldiers sets the stage for a one-on-one confrontation with the enemy officer. Unlike regular combat, duels feature a unique mechanic: a meter at the top of the screen represents both combatants. Landing hits on your opponent increases your portion of the meter, while receiving hits boosts your opponent's. The objective is to fill the meter entirely with your color by damaging your opponent sufficiently. Importantly, your health doesn't determine your starting position in the duel; instead, it's influenced by your overall morale.
