Nintendo's Surprise: An Interactive Alarm Clock and a Mysterious Switch Online Playtest
A Nintendo interactive alarm clock? It's not something many predicted, but the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo is now a reality! Simultaneously, Nintendo launched a secretive Switch Online playtest, adding to the excitement.
The Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo
The Alarmo, priced at $99, uses game sounds to rouse you from slumber. Nintendo promises a truly immersive wake-up experience, making you feel like you're emerging from a Nintendo game world. Initial sounds draw inspiration from titles like Mario, Zelda, and Splatoon, with free updates adding more in the future.
This isn't your average alarm clock. The Alarmo only silences when you fully leave your bed, rewarding your morning triumph with a "brief victory fanfare." While you can wave your hand to temporarily quiet the alarm, prolonged bed-dwelling will only increase its intensity.
Utilizing a radio wave sensor, the Alarmo measures your distance and movement speed without compromising privacy. Unlike camera-based systems, it doesn't record video, and its radio wave technology allows it to function effectively in dark rooms and through obstacles. Nintendo developer Tetsuya Akama highlighted these privacy-focused features.
Early Access for Switch Online Members
For a limited time, Nintendo Switch Online members in the US and Canada can purchase the Alarmo through the My Nintendo Store before its general release. The Nintendo New York store also offers in-person purchases while supplies last.
A Sneak Peek at the Switch Online Playtest
Applications for a Switch Online playtest open October 10th (8:00 AM PT / 11:00 AM ET) and close October 15th (7:59 AM PT / 10:59 AM ET), or earlier if the 10,000 participant limit is reached. The playtest focuses on a new Nintendo Switch Online service feature and is open to participants outside Japan on a first-come, first-served basis.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership (by October 9th, 3:00 PM PDT).
- Age 18 or older (by October 9th, 3:00 PM PDT).
- Nintendo Account registered in Japan, the USA, UK, France, Germany, Italy, or Spain.
The playtest runs from October 23rd (6:00 PM PT / 9:00 PM ET) to November 5th (4:59 PM PT / 7:59 PM ET).
