by Grace Apr 25,2025

Ever since the unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2, fans have been buzzing with excitement and speculation, particularly about a subtle yet intriguing feature from the trailer: the Joy-Cons. The speculation centered around the possibility of the Joy-Cons functioning as mouse controllers, similar to those used on PCs. Now, we have official confirmation: the Joy-Cons can indeed operate in "mouse mode." This innovative feature allows players to glide the Joy-Cons across flat surfaces and use the analog sticks to simulate left-click and right-click actions, just like a traditional mouse. Furthermore, gamers can use two Joy-Cons in mouse mode at the same time, one in each hand, or pair one in standard mode with the other in mouse mode, offering a versatile and immersive gaming experience.

The Nintendo stream showcased the capabilities of the Joy-Con's mouse mode through a sports game reminiscent of Rocket League, but featuring robot characters maneuvering in wheelchair-style vehicles. This game, called Drag and Drive, is a thrilling three-on-three basketball game. To play, gamers must use two Joy-Con controllers in mouse mode to navigate their character around the court and aim to score by sinking the ball into the basket.

The speculation about the Joy-Con's mouse functionality began after the reveal trailer, where the Joy-Cons were seen sliding around in a manner suggestive of PC mice. In an attempt to gather more information, we reached out to Firaxis, the developer behind Civilization 7, but received a cryptic response. This feature, along with the introduction of the new C button, has fueled discussions about the console over the past month. These innovations serve as a counterpoint to criticisms that the Nintendo Switch 2 is playing it "safe," highlighting Nintendo's continued adventurous spirit in gaming.
