Ananta: NetEase's Open-World RPG Unveiled

NetEase Games and Naked Rain have officially revealed the title and a captivating teaser trailer for their previously enigmatic Project Mugen. Now known as Ananta, this urban, open-world RPG offers a glimpse into its sprawling cityscape, diverse characters, and the looming threat of chaotic forces from beyond.

A new preview video showcases Nova City, the game's massive urban environment, along with its diverse cast and the encroaching threat of extradimensional beings. While comparisons to MiHoYo's titles, particularly Zenless Zone Zero, are inevitable, Ananta distinguishes itself through its unique movement mechanics. The trailer highlights impressive character movement, raising questions about the extent of explorable space and whether players will experience truly fluid, Spider-Man-esque traversal across the city's streets and rooftops.

Ananta blends appealing character designs with dynamic combat, a formula popular in today's 3D RPG landscape. However, its ultimate success hinges on its ability to differentiate itself from established giants in the 3D gacha RPG market and potentially challenge their dominance.

Fluid Movement and Exploration

The preview video's standout feature is the impressive character movement showcased. The extent to which this translates to seamless exploration across the entire cityscape remains to be seen, but the potential for fluid movement and traversal is evident.

While similarities to MiHoYo's Hoyoverse titles are apparent, NetEase's ambition to create a unique and compelling experience is clear. Whether Ananta can carve its own niche and compete with the leading 3D gacha RPGs is the ultimate question.
