Sony's Unveiled Los Angeles PlayStation Studio: A New AAA IP in the Making
A newly established PlayStation studio in Los Angeles, California, is developing a high-profile, original AAA title for the PS5, as confirmed by a recent job posting. This marks Sony's 20th first-party studio, adding to its already impressive roster.
The secrecy surrounding this studio has sparked considerable speculation. Two prominent theories exist regarding its origins:
Theory 1: A Bungie Spin-off: The studio could house a team spun off from Bungie following layoffs in July 2024. Approximately 155 Bungie employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment, fueling speculation that this new studio incorporates some of that talent, potentially working on Bungie's "Gummybears" project.
Theory 2: The Jason Blundell Team: Another strong contender is the team led by Jason Blundell, a veteran Call of Duty developer and former co-founder of Deviation Games. Deviation Games, which was developing a PS5 AAA title, unfortunately closed in March 2024. However, many former Deviation Games employees joined PlayStation in May 2024 under Blundell's leadership, suggesting this new studio may be the culmination of that effort. This team's longer gestation period makes it a potentially more likely candidate.
While the exact nature of the game remains a mystery, the possibility of a continuation or reboot of Deviation Games' abandoned project is a popular fan theory. Regardless of its origins, the addition of this studio signifies another exciting first-party title in development for PlayStation, although an official announcement may be some time away.
