Top 10 Game Boy Advance & Nintendo DS Games Hit Nintendo Switch

by Nora Jan 24,2025

A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While the Nintendo Switch Online app boasts a robust Game Boy Advance library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the eShop. Ten games are highlighted: four Game Boy Advance and six Nintendo DS.

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. Although the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA port offers a compelling alternative. A worthwhile comparison, and a more streamlined experience in certain aspects. Steel Empire remains enjoyable regardless of platform, appealing even to casual shooter fans.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

While the Mega Man X series experienced a decline on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged as a worthy successor on the GBA. This inaugural title initiates an excellent side-scrolling action series, though its initial presentation could be smoother. Subsequent entries refined the formula, but this first game is the perfect starting point.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A second Mega Man entry, justified by the distinct gameplay differences between Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The core concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries saw diminishing returns, this remains a highly enjoyable experience.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection offers multiple worthwhile titles, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For me, it's even preferable to the acclaimed Symphony of the Night on the right occasion. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay makes the grinding enjoyable. A unique setting and hidden secrets contribute to its appeal, solidifying its place as a top-tier GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae enjoyed cult status, but limited distribution hampered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare broadened its appeal, establishing Shantae as a prominent character across multiple generations of consoles. Its origins are somewhat ambiguous, stemming from an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA title due to its origins, though not initially localized for that platform. Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is exceptional, though later installments also hold merit.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick boasts equally strong writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save others while uncovering the mystery of your death. A captivating experience that deserves wider recognition.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

Considered one of the best Nintendo DS games, ideally experienced on its original hardware. While ports haven't perfectly replicated the original, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without a DS.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection encompasses all Nintendo DS Castlevania titles. Dawn of Sorrow is highlighted for its improved button controls over the original touch controls, but all three games are excellent.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, but Atlus has successfully adapted it to the Switch. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and most rewarding.
