Dragon Age: The Veilguard: A New Era of Action-Oriented Combat
Dragon Age: The Veilguard promises a significant departure from its predecessors, shifting towards a more action-focused combat system. This change has sparked debate among fans, but the core Dragon Age elements remain. Rook's background, chosen at character creation, impacts both gameplay and narrative, regardless of class. This differs from previous entries, where background primarily influenced dialogue.
The game features nine unique class specializations, each tied to one of six factions within Northern Thedas. These specializations are unlocked by interacting with the factions and are designed to complement the game's narrative and setting. For instance, Rook's connection to the Veil precludes him from being a Blood Mage, and Tevinter Templars lack the magic-suppressing abilities of their southern counterparts.
GameInformer's interview with John Elper revealed the faction-specialization connection. The Mourn Watch of Nevarra, for example, might train Rook as a Reaper (a new specialization using "night blades") or a Death Caller (a necromancer), depending on the player's chosen class. Faction selection also influences Rook's non-combat attire within the Lighthouse. While the impact of background on initially available specializations is yet to be fully revealed, each faction plays a pivotal role in the narrative. Choosing a faction grants three unique traits affecting both combat and non-combat gameplay. For example, siding with the Lords of Fortune increases damage against mercenaries, improves takedowns, and boosts reputation with that faction. Crucially, background, lineage, and class are permanent choices.
