How Invincible’s Developers Designed Cecil for a Fighting Game

by Daniel Dec 11,2025

Invincible VS introduces its eighth playable character: Cecil. As the pragmatic director of the Global Defense Agency, his inclusion comes as a surprise. With no superhuman abilities, it's difficult to picture him holding his own against powerhouses like Omni-Man and others. However, Invincible creator Robert Kirkman insisted on Cecil’s presence, challenging the developers at Quarter Up to design a viable role for him.

Their solution revolves around the advanced gadgets Cecil employs in the Invincible series, which help balance the odds in this 3v3 tag-team fighting game. But there’s more: Invincible VS features an expansive Story Mode where Cecil plays a pivotal role. Kirkman and Quarter Up remain fairly tight-lipped, describing it as a “playable episode”—raising anticipation considerably.

In an interview with IGN, Kirkman, executive producer Mike Willette, art director Dan Eder, and narrative director Mike Rogers share what they can about Story Mode. They also explore Cecil’s gameplay mechanics in depth. Read on to learn whether Invincible VS aligns with the show’s canon, get details on Cecil’s moveset, and much more.
