Elden Ring Nightreign Will Have Procedurally Generated Terrains
Includes Volcanoes, Poison Swamps, and Forests
In an exciting development for fans of the Soulslike genre, Elden Ring Nightreign's director, Junya Ishizaki, unveiled the game's dynamic map feature in an interview with PC Gamer’s Magazine Issue 405, as reported by Games Radar on February 10, 2025. Ishizaki shared that the game will feature large-scale, procedurally generated changes to the terrain, introducing elements like volcanoes, forests, and swamps.
This approach aligns with the traditional Soulslike experience, where environmental hazards like poison swamps challenge players to adapt their strategies. "The map itself is designed to be a giant dungeon," Ishizaki noted, emphasizing the goal of offering players a fresh exploration experience with every playthrough. The presence of forests, for example, can alter gameplay dynamics by providing cover for both the player and their foes, necessitating cautious navigation.
The choice of terrain directly influences player strategy, particularly in facing bosses. Ishizaki pointed out, "Once you've made that choice, maybe you have an idea of how you want to strategize against that boss, and this might change how you approach the map." This gives players the agency to select their path, such as opting for a poison weapon to tackle specific challenges.
Familiar terrains from previous titles, such as the notorious Swamp of Aeonia and Lake of Rot, are expected to make a return, bringing their unique challenges and debuffs. Additionally, these dynamically generated landscapes might introduce specific enemies like Giant Lobsters, Crabs, Runebears, and Magma Wyrms, enhancing the variety and unpredictability of encounters.
