Following the warm reception of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, speculation is rife about which Bethesda title will receive the remaster treatment next. With Fallout 3 rumored for a revival (following a 2023 leak), what upgrades might Bethesda bring to its 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG?
Bruce Nesmith, a key designer on Fallout 3, highlighted the game’s “subpar” gun combat, predicting significant enhancements in a potential remaster.
In a conversation with VideoGamer, Nesmith suggested that Fallout 3 Remastered would feature shooting mechanics closer to those in Fallout 4.
“Look at Fallout 4’s improvements—that shows what Bethesda deemed necessary to overhaul from Fallout 3,” Nesmith explained.
“In Fallout 4, extensive work went into refining gun combat, as Fallout 3 was Bethesda’s first attempt at a shooter-style game. The results were remarkable.”
Oblivion Remastered, crafted by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, boasts a range of upgrades, from 4K resolution at 60 frames per second to refined leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and menus. It also introduces new dialogue, an improved third-person perspective, and advanced lip-sync technology. Fans are thrilled, with some arguing Oblivion Remastered feels more like a remake. Bethesda, however, has clarified its choice to pursue a remaster.
Nesmith indicated that Fallout 3 Remastered would likely follow a similar path of improvements as Oblivion Remastered.
“Fallout 3’s combat didn’t match the shooters of its era,” he noted. “It’s an RPG shooter, not a fast-paced action game. But Fallout 4’s combat advancements were significant, and I expect those to carry over, assuming Bethesda follows a similar approach.”
“Oblivion wasn’t just updated to Skyrim’s 2011 standards,” he continued. “It feels like it surpasses even the latest Skyrim graphical updates.” Nesmith praised The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered as akin to “Oblivion 2.0.”
Bethesda is juggling multiple projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI, potential Starfield expansions, ongoing Fallout 76 updates, and the Fallout TV show, which will explore New Vegas in Season 2. Fans have plenty to look forward to.
