Scalebound Development: A Possible Revival?

Scalebound was once hailed as one of the most ambitious action projects of its time, skillfully blending dynamic combat, music, and a novel system of interaction with a massive dragon companion. As an Xbox One exclusive, it sparked immense interest but unfortunately never reached its release. Initially announced in 2014, the project was officially terminated by Microsoft in 2017, leaving fans and developers alike disappointed.

Recently, Clovers Inc's official account on X shared a video featuring Hideki Kamiya and his team revisiting archived gameplay footage of Scalebound. In the video, Kamiya expressed nostalgia for the game's development process and affirmed his pride in the project, despite its cancellation. Kamiya further amplified his sentiment by retweeting the video with a direct message to Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's gaming division, saying, "Come on, Phil, let's do this!" This call to action indicates Kamiya's ongoing interest in reviving Scalebound, a desire he had previously voiced in early 2022.

Speculation about Scalebound's revival has been a recurring topic, with rumors intensifying in early 2023. Several sources hinted at a potential reboot, yet no official confirmation from Microsoft has been forthcoming. In an interview with the Japanese publication Game Watch, Phil Spencer responded to questions about Scalebound with a smile and the statement, "I have nothing to add at this time," leaving fans to wonder about the game's future.

Even if Microsoft expresses interest in reviving Scalebound, fans shouldn't expect an immediate return. Hideki Kamiya is currently engaged with a new Okami installment at Clovers Inc. Should Xbox greenlight the project, Kamiya's involvement would likely begin only after completing his current commitments. Despite the challenges, the persistent discussions and nostalgia surrounding Scalebound offer hope that this long-awaited game might one day see the light of day.
