Sony has recently unveiled a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, sparking excitement with a teaser for their debut game. According to Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, teamLFG was born out of Bungie, the developers behind Destiny and Marathon, and is currently immersed in an ambitious incubation project that has Hulst buzzing with anticipation.
The name teamLFG is derived from the gaming term 'Looking For Group,' hinting at a strong focus on social gaming. Their first game is described as a team-based action game, drawing eclectic inspiration from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and intriguingly, "frog-type games." Set in a lighthearted, comedic world within a brand-new, mythic, science-fantasy universe, teamLFG aims to create an environment where players can forge friendships, build communities, and find a sense of belonging.
teamLFG is passionate about crafting games that foster a sense of camaraderie and memorable moments. They envision a world where players log in to find their friends already online, share laughs over in-game antics, and celebrate epic plays that turn the tide of matches. Their goal is to develop immersive multiplayer worlds that players can engage with, learn, and master over countless hours. Moreover, teamLFG plans to involve their community in the development process through early access playtests, staying agile to respond to player feedback both before and after the game's launch, ensuring continuous growth and enhancement of both the game and its community.
teamLFG's game is the result of an incubation project that emerged from Bungie during a period marked by significant layoffs. Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie struggled with financial targets as Destiny 2 saw a decline, leading to layoffs affecting around 100 employees in November 2023, followed by another round in 2024 impacting 220 more, with an additional 155 employees being integrated into other parts of Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was during these turbulent times that the incubation project, now known as teamLFG's debut game, was announced.
In related news, a former Bungie lawyer commended Sony's role in pushing through improvements to Destiny 2, suggesting a positive influence from the parent company. Meanwhile, Bungie has unveiled their extraction shooter, Marathon, and shared the roadmap for Destiny 2's future, while confirming no plans for Destiny 3 and the cancellation of a Destiny spinoff called Payback.
