Veteran Call of Duty Developer Greg Reisdorf Departs Sledgehammer Games After 15 Years
After a remarkable 15-year tenure, Greg Reisdorf, the creative director for Call of Duty multiplayer, has announced his departure from Sledgehammer Games. His contributions spanned numerous Call of Duty titles, significantly shaping the multiplayer experience for millions of players.
Reisdorf's journey began with the development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011), Sledgehammer Games' inaugural title. His involvement extended across subsequent Sledgehammer-developed entries, collaborating with other studios like Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Raven Software on various Call of Duty releases, including the recent Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Call of Duty: Warzone.
In a heartfelt Twitter thread on January 13th, Reisdorf confirmed his departure, effective January 10th. He highlighted key accomplishments, including his work on Modern Warfare 3's memorable "Blood Brothers" campaign sequence. His contributions also extended to shaping the "boots on the ground" era of Call of Duty, notably influencing gameplay mechanics in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, such as boost jumps and tactical reloads.
Reisdorf openly discussed his experiences, including the challenges faced with Call of Duty: WW2's initial class-restricted weapon system, a decision later reversed. He also shared his preference for traditional three-lane maps, exemplified by his work on Call of Duty: Vanguard, prioritizing enjoyable gameplay over strict military realism.
His most recent role saw him leading multiplayer development for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2023). This included overseeing the creation of numerous live season modes, such as Season 1's "Snowfight" and "Infectious Holiday," and a total of over 20 modes throughout the game's post-launch support. He even revisited and enhanced classic Modern Warfare 2 maps, adding subtle details like Shepherd's skull in the "Rust" map.
Reisdorf's departure marks the end of a significant chapter in Call of Duty history. However, his concluding statement hints at continued involvement within the gaming industry, leaving fans eager to see what he accomplishes next.
