Sony Leaks AI-Powered PlayStation Character Prototype

by Lucy Mar 12,2025

A leaked internal video reveals Sony's exploration of AI-powered PlayStation characters. The Verge reported on a PlayStation Studios' advanced technology group video showcasing AI-driven Aloy from the *Horizon* games. The video, subsequently removed from YouTube due to a copyright claim from Muso (a Sony client), featured Sony Interactive Entertainment director of software engineering, Sharwin Raghoebardajal, conversing with an AI Aloy. This interaction utilized OpenAI's Whisper for speech-to-text, GPT-4 and Llama 3 for dialogue, Sony's Emotional Voice Synthesis (EVS) for speech, and Mockingbird technology for facial animation.

The AI Aloy, voiced by a robotic text-to-speech generator (not Ashly Burch), exhibited stiff facial movements and lifeless eyes. During the conversation, Aloy revealed her cloned status and discussed her feelings about it. The demo seamlessly transitioned into *Horizon Forbidden West*, allowing Raghoebardajal to continue the conversation within the game world. This created a somewhat jarring experience, highlighting the irony of using Aloy, considering the *Horizon* storyline.

The prototype, developed with Guerrilla Games, showcases Sony's AI investment. While promising, Sony hasn't confirmed plans to integrate this technology into consumer products. This research aligns with industry trends, as competitors like Microsoft (with its Muse AI) are heavily invested in AI game development. Generative AI's use, however, faces criticism regarding ethical concerns, rights issues, and its ability to produce enjoyable content. Keywords Studios' failed AI-generated game exemplifies these challenges.

Despite these challenges, EA and Capcom are also exploring generative AI. Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions and Head of Product at PlayStation Studios, highlighted the importance of AI-driven personalization for Gen Z and Gen Alpha gamers, emphasizing the potential for more engaging NPC interactions. Activision's recent admission of using generative AI for some *Call of Duty: Black Ops 6* assets, following a backlash over an AI-generated loading screen, further illustrates the industry's ongoing experimentation and the associated controversies.
