Space Marine 2 Dev Denies Live Service Claims

by Aiden Jan 17,2026

The developers and publishers of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have clarified they're not transitioning the game into a "full live service" model following criticism over community events accused of fostering "FOMO" (fear of missing out).

FOMO tactics are commonly employed in live service games to drive immediate engagement and microtransaction spending through time-limited content. Many players have expressed concerns about this approach potentially harming player-game relationships. Notably, a 2021 UK GambleAware study found many games employ psychological manipulation - including FOMO strategies - to promote loot box purchases.

While Space Marine 2 doesn't feature loot boxes, its newly introduced community events offering exclusive cosmetics have drawn criticism, with some players labeling the game as adopting live service elements.

Responding to player concerns, Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive acknowledged receiving "negative feedback" about the events' FOMO elements. They confirmed all event items will eventually return for general availability.

We've recognized the community's discontent with our event-based cosmetic unlocks. While we want these events to reward dedicated players with early access, we never intended them to create frustration. All event items will be made available later for all players. We're currently redesigning the unlocking process to improve accessibility.

As a goodwill gesture, Focus is distributing the coveted Mk VIII Errant Helmet for free to all players who link their PROS account. Previously, this cosmetic required completing challenging in-game achievements before March 3.

The development team is preparing Update 7.0, which will introduce new weapons, maps, and PvE progression systems. This follows previous commitments to address content drought concerns.

Space Marine 2 achieved phenomenal commercial success last year, selling 5 million copies and becoming Warhammer's fastest-selling video game to date.
