Avowed's Success Fuels Talk of Expansions and Sequels
Following the successful launch of Avowed, Obsidian and Microsoft are reportedly pleased with sales figures, sparking discussions about potential future installments. In a recent Bloomberg interview (February 22, 2025), Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel hinted at the possibility of expansions or a sequel.
While no official plans have been announced, Patel expressed a strong desire to continue working within the established world, stating, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."
A Rocky Development Journey
Patel also shared insights into the game's challenging development. The project, initiated in 2018, underwent significant changes, including a leadership shift and a game reboot in 2021. The team faced hurdles, including scaling back features and abandoning the multiplayer aspect. Despite the complexities of managing a large team (over 80 people), Patel emphasized the eventual cohesion of the project, noting, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on...things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together." Key changes included a focus on the Pillars of Eternity lore and a shift from an open world to open zones, allowing for greater refinement of these areas.
Pillars of Eternity Tactics on the Horizon?
The resurgence of the Pillars of Eternity franchise with Avowed has fueled interest in a new project: Pillars of Eternity Tactics. In a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, Pillars of Eternity Director Josh Sawyer confirmed the studio's enthusiasm for a tactics game, acknowledging the challenges of defining its scope and visual quality. Sawyer also reiterated his commitment to developing Pillars of Eternity 3, envisioning a budget comparable to Baldur’s Gate 3 ($100 million).
Avowed is currently available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned for further updates!
