In Dune: Awakening, sandworms operate as autonomous environmental hazards rather than player-controlled tools. Departing from Frank Herbert's novels where characters summoned worms using thumpers, this iconic mechanic won't feature in the game.
According to developers, sandworms function as sophisticated NPCs with programmed patrol patterns, daily cycles, and autonomous behaviors. Players cannot weaponize them by summoning worms near enemy bases as strategic weapons. However, nearby worms may investigate disturbances - whether from excessive movement across dunes or deploying a thumper - though these actions don't guarantee an encounter.
The signature Fremen practice of worm-riding, prominent in Herbert's novels and the recent films, won't be available at launch. Creative director Joel Bylos cited narrative constraints from the Dune cinematic universe as influencing this design decision.
Future updates may expand Fremen cultural elements, possibly introducing worm-riding mechanics. However, developers have confirmed this iconic feature won't be included in the initial release.
Dune: Awakening releases May 20th for PC, with console versions arriving afterwards. The survival MMO aims to authentically recreate Arrakis' dangerous ecosystem while respecting the franchise's cinematic adaptation.
