CD Projekt Red is setting a new standard for NPC development in The Witcher 4. Following feedback on Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3, the studio aims to create a truly immersive world where every non-playable character feels alive and unique.
Game director Sebastian Kalemba explained their new approach: “Our guiding principle is that each NPC should appear to be living their own life, with their own individual story.”
This commitment is evident in the first trailer, showcasing the secluded village of Stromford. Villagers adhere to local superstitions, revering a forest deity. A scene depicts a girl praying in the woods until Ciri arrives to battle a monster.
Kalemba further emphasized the pursuit of realism: “We’re striving for maximum realism in NPCs—from their physical appearance to their facial expressions and behavior. This will create an unparalleled level of immersion. We're aiming for a significant leap in quality.”
Developers plan to imbue each village and character with distinctive traits and narratives, reflecting the unique beliefs and cultural practices of isolated communities.
The Witcher 4 is slated for a 2025 release, and anticipation is high among fans eager to see how this innovative approach to world and character building unfolds.
