Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed offers players continuous opportunities to shape their character's path and ideology. Game director Carrie Patel emphasizes that every decision, no matter how seemingly insignificant, contributes to the overall narrative arc.
"The game provides constant opportunities for self-expression and exploration," Patel explains. "It encourages players to be mindful of their experience, asking themselves: 'When am I engaged? When am I curious? What keeps me invested?'"
Player choices and their consequences are deeply intertwined with the exploration of Eora's intricate world, particularly within The Living Lands, where political power is fiercely contested. "The interwoven narratives are a key element I've enjoyed developing," Patel adds.
Players assume the role of an Aedyran Empire envoy, tasked with investigating a spiritual plague while simultaneously pursuing their own political ambitions. "Meaningful roleplay stems from providing players with rich content to explore," Patel notes. "It's about defining who you want to be and how you express that within the game's dynamic environment."
Beyond the intricate RPG mechanics, Avowed features strategic combat blending magic, swords, and firearms. "The diverse abilities and weapon choices ensure a unique experience with each playthrough," Patel confirms.
In an interview with IGN, Patel revealed the game boasts numerous endings, each with multiple variations. "We have a double-digit number of ending slides, and they can combine in many ways," she explains. "True to Obsidian's style, your ending is a direct reflection of your cumulative choices throughout the game, shaped by the content you've encountered and your actions within it."
