Infinity Nikki's upcoming PC and PlayStation debut is generating considerable excitement, fueled by a recently released behind-the-scenes documentary detailing its development. This insightful look into the creation process reveals the involvement of seasoned industry veterans.
A Glimpse into Miraland
Launching December 4th (EST/PST), the fashion-focused open-world adventure Infinity Nikki unveils a 25-minute documentary showcasing the dedication and passion poured into its creation. Interviews with key team members highlight the journey.
The project began in December 2019 when the Nikki series producer approached CTO Fei Ge with a vision: an open-world game featuring Nikki on grand adventures. Secrecy shrouded the early stages, with a separate office used to maintain confidentiality. Team recruitment and foundational work continued for over a year.
Game designer Sha Dingyu describes the unique challenges of integrating the established Nikki IP and its core dress-up mechanics into an open-world setting. Building the framework from scratch, step-by-step, after extensive research proved demanding.
Despite the hurdles, the team remained committed to realizing their vision. Originating as a mobile game series (starting with NikkiUp2U in 2012), Infinity Nikki marks the fifth installment and the franchise's first foray onto PC and consoles. Ge explains that while a straightforward mobile sequel was an option, the team prioritized technological and product advancements, driving the evolution of the Nikki IP. This dedication is evident in the producer's creation of a clay model of the Grand Millewish Tree, a tangible representation of the project's passion.
The documentary offers glimpses of Miraland's stunning landscapes, focusing on the mystical Grand Millewish Tree, home to Faewish Sprites, and its environs. The vibrant world is populated by NPCs with their own routines, adding realism, as highlighted by game designer Xiao Li. Even during missions, NPCs maintain their daily lives, creating a dynamic environment.
A Team of All-Stars
The game's polished visuals are a testament to the talent assembled. In addition to the core Nikki team, Infinity Nikki boasts international expertise. Lead Sub Director Kentaro “Tomiken” Tominaga, a veteran game designer from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and concept artist Andrzej Dybowski, who contributed to The Witcher 3, are key members.
From the project's official commencement on December 28th, 2019, to its December 4th, 2024 launch, the team dedicated 1814 days to bringing their vision to life. Anticipation is high for this journey through Miraland with Nikki and Momo.
