"Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat Impacts System Resources, Final Specs Out"

by Connor May 23,2025

Digital Foundry has recently disclosed the final technical specifications for the Nintendo Switch 2, highlighting significant concerns about the impact of the new GameChat feature on the console's system resources. This feature, which was showcased during last month's Nintendo Direct, can be activated with a simple press of the C button on the new Joy-Con controllers. GameChat allows players to watch and interact with each other, even across different games, using a built-in microphone and camera. This innovative functionality aims to enhance multiplayer experiences and could potentially be Nintendo's most impactful online feature in years.

According to Digital Foundry, Nintendo has provided developers with a GameChat testing tool to simulate API latency and L3 cache misses that occur in real-world scenarios. This tool allows developers to test the feature's impact without needing active GameChat sessions. The provision of such a tool suggests that GameChat may indeed affect system performance, raising questions about whether game performance will vary with GameChat enabled or disabled. Digital Foundry expressed interest in seeing how this might affect game performance, a concern echoed by developers.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, and until then, the exact impact of GameChat on gameplay remains uncertain. In addition to GameChat, Digital Foundry revealed the Switch 2's memory allocation: 3GB is reserved for the system, leaving 9GB available for games. This is a notable increase from the original Switch, which had 0.8GB reserved for the system and 3.2GB for games. However, like all consoles, the Switch 2's GPU resources are not fully accessible to developers, with some reserved by the system itself.

The Switch 2 features a 7.9-inch wide color gamut LCD screen, capable of displaying at 1080p resolution (1920x1080), a significant upgrade from the 6.2-inch screen of the original Switch, the 7-inch screen of the Switch OLED, and the 5.5-inch screen of the Switch Lite. It also supports HDR10 and VRR up to 120 Hz, enabling games to reach up to 120fps under the right conditions.

When docked, the Switch 2 can output games at 4K resolution (3840x2160) at 60fps or at 1080p/1440p (1920x1080/2560x1440) at 120fps, powered by a custom NVIDIA processor. These advanced graphics capabilities, combined with the detailed specs provided by Digital Foundry, make the Switch 2 a highly anticipated upgrade for gamers.
