Chess Enters the Esports Arena: A Historic First at EWC 2025

The Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025 tournament lineup has a surprising new addition: chess! This ancient game joins the ranks of esports, a move that promises to introduce the game to a wider audience.

Chess Officially Recognized as an Esport

A groundbreaking partnership between Chess.com, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) brings competitive chess to the world's largest gaming and esports festival for the first time. EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert hailed chess as "the mother of all strategy games," emphasizing its global appeal and competitive scene as a perfect fit for the EWC.

Magnus Carlsen, a retired world champion and current world number one, will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a broader audience. He expressed excitement about the opportunity to introduce chess to new players and inspire future generations.

The EWC 2025 will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, featuring a $1.5 million prize pool. Qualification involves competing in the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT) in February and May. The top 12 players, along with four from a "Last Chance Qualifier," will vie for a $300,000 prize pool and a spot in the EWC, marking chess's inaugural esports appearance.

To engage a wider audience, particularly esports fans, the 2025 CCT will utilize a faster-paced format. Matches will employ a 10-minute time control with no increment, and tiebreakers will be decided by a single Armageddon game.

Chess, originating in ancient India over 1500 years ago, has evolved into a globally popular pastime. Its digital adaptation, particularly through platforms like Chess.com, has broadened its reach, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Media exposure, including streaming platforms and shows like "The Queen's Gambit," has further boosted its popularity.

This official recognition as an esport promises to attract even more players and enthusiasts to the game.
