Palworld CEO Takuro Mizobe recently spoke with ASCII Japan about the game's future, specifically addressing the possibility of transforming the creature-catching shooter into a live service title. His insights reveal a careful consideration of both business opportunities and player expectations.
Pocketpair CEO on Palworld's Live Service Potential
A Promising Path, but Steep Challenges
Mizobe confirmed that while updates—including a new map, Pals, and raid bosses—are planned, the long-term direction remains undecided. He outlined two potential paths: completing Palworld as a buy-to-play (B2P) title, or transitioning to a live service model (LiveOps). B2P offers a one-time purchase for full game access, while live service games typically monetize through ongoing content releases.
Mizobe acknowledged the business advantages of a live service model, stating it offers greater profit potential and extends the game's lifespan. However, he emphasized the significant challenges, noting Palworld's initial design wasn't built for this model.
Crucially, Mizobe highlighted the importance of player preference. He pointed out that successfully transitioning to a live service model usually involves starting as a free-to-play (F2P) game and then adding paid content. Palworld's B2P structure complicates this, requiring a significant shift similar to the successful, yet lengthy, transitions seen in games like PUBG and Fall Guys.
He further discussed the complexities of adapting other monetization strategies. While advice on ad monetization was received, Mizobe noted its limited applicability to PC games, citing potential negative player reactions and a lack of successful precedents. He observed that Steam players, in particular, tend to react negatively to in-game advertisements.
Currently, Pocketpair is focused on attracting new players while retaining its existing community. Mizobe concluded by reiterating the ongoing deliberation regarding Palworld's future direction, emphasizing the importance of careful consideration. The game remains in early access, having recently released its major Sakurajima update and introducing a PvP arena.
