Colossal Remake Unveils New Developments

Update on the Shadow of the Colossus Film Adaptation

Director Andy Muschietti recently offered an update on the long-awaited live-action adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus. While the project has been in development for over a decade (initially announced by Sony Pictures in 2009, with Fumito Ueda, the game's director, involved), Muschietti assures fans it's not abandoned.

The delay, he explains on Radio TU’s La Baulera del Coso, stems from factors beyond creative control, specifically the complexities of budgeting a film based on such a popular and visually ambitious game. Muschietti confirmed the budget is still under discussion and that multiple script versions exist, with one currently favored.

This update follows Sony's recent announcement of several other game adaptations at CES 2025, including a Helldivers film, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated feature.

Muschietti, known for directing It and The Flash, acknowledges he's not a hardcore gamer but calls Shadow of the Colossus a "masterpiece," having played it multiple times. He understands the game's enduring appeal and the challenge of translating its unique atmosphere and iconic colossi to the big screen. The game's influence is even seen in other titles, such as Capcom's 2024 RPG Dragon's Dogma 2.

Despite the 2018 PlayStation 4 remake, Shadow of the Colossus retains its classic status. Muschietti's adaptation aims to honor this legacy, captivating existing fans while introducing the game's fantastical world to a wider audience. The project's continued development, though delayed, suggests a commitment to bringing this beloved game to life on the silver screen. The upcoming, currently untitled game from Ueda's studio, GenDesign, further underscores the enduring impact of the original 2005 title.
